In the first game in Ladner of the season, the Ice Hawks did not disappoint, putting up five goals against the Grandview Steelers to win 5-2 for the second time so far this year.
Mateo Sjoberg quickly opened the scoring with a goal 38 seconds into the game following a long shot from the point by Tye Hemenway, and the Hawks never looked back from there.
Hemenway had another assist off a long shot later in the period, and rookie Chayse Hainz tipped the puck on its way to the net, scoring his first PJHL goal and making it a 2-0 Delta lead.
Just 25 seconds later, Declan Warburton continued his hot start to the year, finishing off a 2-on-1 after taking a saucer pass from Beckett Cross – his fourth of the year putting the Hawks up 3-0 after 20 minutes.
Both teams had some quality chances on net in the second, but the puck never made it over the goal line, keeping it 3-0 Hawks through two.
The Ice Hawks added on in the third period, with Michele Romeo potting a power play goal on a rebound from another Hemenway point shot, giving Delta some breathing room at 4-0.
Grandview’s Colby Longeau broke the shutout halfway through the third, tipping a pass in past Zach Shaughnessy on the right side, but Romeo was not done on the man-advantage. His second of the game and second of the season came again on the power play to restore the four-goal lead.
Towards the end of the game, Shaughnessy came out to play the puck, but stumbled and Dominic Seminoff was able to take advantage, scoring on a wide-open net to make it a 5-2 score, but that’s as close as the visitors would come, as Delta took home their second win of the season.
