January 12 Game Recap – Hawks win the Tunnel Series!

The Ice Hawks have won the 2022-23 Tunnel Series over the Richmond Sockeyes, taking the season series 3-1 with a 8-2 win on Thursday night.

Delta outshot Richmond 59-35 in the game, with Hawks starter Zach Shaughnessy stopping 33 of 35 shots he saw in the win, and captain Alec Scouras had a hat trick to help lead his team to a big win and sole possession of first place in the Tom Shaw Conference.

Colin Jang and Conner Merriman had goals to put the Hawks up 2-0 in the first period, Merriman’s coming on the power play. Richmond’s Teo Lin did put one past Shaughnessy before the end of the period, to make it a tight 2-1 game after the first 20 minutes.

The second period followed the same format as the first – Alec Scouras and Yuji Akimoto added goals in the frame to put Delta up 4-1, with Lin again scoring before the period was over, making it 4-2 through two.

The Hawks completely took over in the third, though, scoring four goals. Scouras had two goals, one full-strength and one power play, completing the hat trick and making it 6-2 Hawks. Carson Hemenway added one, his twelfth of the season, and Merriman had another power play goal at the midway mark of the final frame to finish up the scoring for an 8-2 Delta win on the road.
