January 19 – Hawks Coast to Win Over Tsunami

GIBSONS, B.C. – The Delta Ice Hawks made their way across the water, from Horseshoe Bay to Langdale, ready to make waves in a Sunday afternoon trek to the Sunshine Coast to take on the Coastal Tsunami.

Early into the game, Coastal Tsunami forward Oliver Nottingham and Ice Hawks defender Dylan Stafford collided along the wall, leaving Nottingham down on the ice and seeing Stafford taken out of the game for checking from behind. On the ensuing five-minute power play chance, the Tsunami opened the scoring as Raydon Parkes cut in on goal and powered towards Merik Erickson in the Delta crease with a quick shot to break the ice. The rest of the period flowed along, with Coastal ebbing and flowing between defending their lead and testing their chances at expansion. Delta weathered a few spots of choppy waters, with Mateo Sjoberg sent off for cross-checking and some late four-on-four action with the Dawsons, Delta’s Toledo (Charging) and Coastal’s Thomas (Roughing), sidelined on off-setting minors.

The second period truly kicked off with the slick stylings of Grady Lenton, in perfect position on an in-transition passing play to bat the puck into a wide-open cage to tie the game at one. A small litany of penalties commenced, with more off-setting penalties as Dawson Thomas was once more dispatched to the box for roughing, this time alongside Miller Bruckshaw for holding the stick. Declan Warburton would be assessed a late 10-minute misconduct, as would Danylo Bereza, but the true watershed moment of the game came late as Brogan Kennedy put a late short-handed goal past Finn Morrison, a goal that would eventually stand as the game-winner.
