After a tight first period, the Delta Ice Hawks let loose on home ice, scoring 11 goals in the last two periods to take over the game and defeat the Aldergrove Kodiaks 12-2.
Delta outshot the visitors 66-19, tallying at least 20 shots in every period, and holding the Kodiaks to less than 10 shots per frame.
Nick Goyer opened the scoring all on his own, taking the puck literally end-to-end, weaving through every Kodiak, scoring his seventh goal of the season on the backhand to get the Hawks on the board with the only goal of the first, 1-0.
It was a different story in the second, as the Hawks netted five in the period, with the last three coming less than four minutes apart. Dany Bereza got it started by doubling the lead with a similar style goal to Goyer, getting goalie Sam Weinstein-Smith moving, and sliding a backhander five-hole to make it 2-0 Hawks.
Aldergrove fired back shortly after that with a quick passing play 3-on-2 that saw Jasha Bichin make a move around Zach Shaughnessy to get the Kodiaks on the board.
Later in the frame, Brogan Kennedy chipped a pass up near the net that appeared to be out of Declan Warburton’s reach, but he dove for it one-handed and scored from his stomach, with one of the craziest goals we’ve seen so far this year, to give the Hawks a 3-1 lead.
Warburton scored again just over two minutes later, this time walking in from the slot and rifling a shot over the left shoulder of Weinstein-Smith for his twelfth of the year and a 4-1 Hawks advantage.
Another two minutes later, Beckett Cross scored his eighth of the year by being in the right place at the right time to put home a pass threaded onto his stick from Teegan Sara and extend Delta’s lead to 5-1.
Goyer got his second of the game before the end of the frame, somehow getting a close-angle shot up and over Weinstein-Smith for a five-goal Hawks lead heading into the final period.
Following a Taylor Mackie goal for Aldy to open the third, the Hawks had another flurry of goals in the last period, starting with back-to-back scores from captain Tye Hemenway – a couple of long shots from the deep slot made their way through the traffic out front and to the back of the net for an 8-2 Delta lead.
Less than a minute later, a Brandon Petrie shot from the centre point found mesh for his third of the season that made it 9-2 Hawks.
Ryden Mathieson got the Hawks into double-digits with his twentieth goal of the year, finishing off a tic-tac-toe play. Cross added his second of the game by winning a challenge along the left wing and looping around to fire on net, earning his ninth this year – 11-2 Delta.
Goyer wrapped up the scoring on the night with another end-to-end goal for a hat trick and a 12-2 Hawks final.
