In the third game in three days for the Ice Hawks, Delta showed no signs of slowing down, as they took a 4-1 win over the Port Coquitlam Trailblazers.
Zach Shaughnessy put on an absolute show in net, making multiple fantastic saves to keep his team ahead for the entire game, only allowing one tough goal late in the game.
Who else but Mateo Sjoberg opened the scoring for the Ice Hawks, taking a pass at the Delta blue line all the way down the ice, firing a shot off the far post and in for his thirteenth goal of the year in 12 games.
Delta’s lead doubled when Beckett Cross grabbed a puck kicked to him by a PoCo defender and he wove his way through two Trailblazers and scored on Kieran Caughran for a 2-0 tally through the first.
Both teams pushed hard offensively in the second period, but nobody found the back of the net. Shaughnessy made several key saves to keep the Trailblazers off the board through two.
In the third, it only took a few minutes for the Hawks to break through again, as Lucas Jakubec came away with the puck after a battle for it along the boards in the PoCo zone. He walked into the slot and fired away, getting it under the arm of Caughran to put Delta up three.
PoCo was able to jam one in late and break Shaughnessy’s shutout with less than five minutes to go, Derek Leroux getting his stick on it to poke it through the pads for the Trailblazers’ lone goal of the game.
Sjoberg snagged the three-goal lead back with 27 seconds to go with a long shot on the empty net, making it a 4-1 final.
