October 15 Game Recap – Hawks Win!!

The Ice Hawks are back on the winning side, following Friday’s loss in PoCo, defeating the Surrey Knights 7-2 on home ice Tuesday night.

Rookie Brogan Kennedy had quite the night, scoring a hat trick in just his fourteenth PJHL game and pouring some life into the Ice Hawks after a dicey first period.

The first 20 minutes were a seesaw battle, with Surrey starting hot in the first half, and Delta picking up the pressure in the second half, with neither team able to find the back of the net in the first 20 minutes.

Both teams broke through in the second period, with Delta scoring three goals in the first eight minutes before Surrey was able to get on the board.

Kennedy, who was late to the game due to the closure of the Massey Tunnel, provided the opening spark for the Ice Hawks. Beckett Cross came in down the right wing and found Kennedy alone out front for a one-timer to get the scoring started.

A few minutes later, Danylo Bereza got his first goal of the year in his second game of the year on a mirror image of the first goal, with Grady Lenton sweeping down the left wing and dropping a short pass for Bereza, who was tight on the net and went to the far side of the net to make it a 2-0 Hawks lead.

And not long after that, Lucas Jakubec basically created his own chance by keeping the puck in the offensive zone and cut through the middle, firing a backhand shot past Marcus Taylor for his seventh of the year.

Former Ice Hawk Neland Voshell scored the goal for Surrey in the second period, potting it into a open net, with Zach Shaughnessy getting pulled too far across the net on the initial shot to get back in time to make the save.

But Kennedy restored the three-goal lead before the end of the period, with Jakubec finding Declan Warburton coming into the zone, and Warburton passed through the slot to Kennedy for an easy tap-in and a 4-1 Delta lead after 40.

In the third, Kennedy completed the hat trick, winding through the slot around a defender and then used that defender as a screen to beat Taylor for his seventh of the year and a 5-1 Hawks lead.

Jakubec doubled his production in the game by finishing off a rebound on a sharp angle from a Chayse Hainz shot to extend it to a 6-1 lead.

Surrey notched another before the end of the contest, with Braden Chenier’s point shot getting through on the power play, but the Hawks weren’t done yet.

Beckett Cross stole a puck from a Knights defender at centre ice and went off on a breakaway, deeking around Taylor and finishing off on the backhand to make the final tally 7-2 Delta.
