The Ice Hawks wrapped up a busy four-game week with a 5-3 win on the road over the Surrey Knights in the first meeting between the two teams this season, and the first start of the year for Merik Erickson.
Delta nearly had 50 shots in the game, starting with 20 in the first period, when three of their five goals were scored. Mateo Sjoberg scored his league-leading fifteenth goal of the season on an early power play for the Hawks, walking in from the point and scoring from the face off dot, giving them a 1-0 lead 1:37 into the game.
Past the halfway mark of the period, Nicholas Goyer banked a pass up for Ryden Mathieson to skate on to and he was able to deke Marcus Taylor and double the Hawks’ lead.
With seconds left in the frame, Goyer was out front for a rebound and was able to poke the puck through to make it a 3-0 Delta lead heading into the first intermission.
The Knights had the lone goal of the second period, with Devyn Hayre netting the first goal of the night for the home team to make it 3-1.
Lucas Jakubec potted the final two goals for the Hawks in the third period, twice trading goals with Braden Chenier to wrap up the scoring. Jackubec’s first came 1:26 into the period to regain the three-goal lead, flipping in a rebound in the slot.
Nearly 10 minutes later, Chenier scored to bring the Knights closer, but Jakubec’s second goal sealed the game for Delta, which was another right place at the right time moment for the rookie, as he was able to put home another rebound to make it 5-2. Chenier’s second of the period made it 5-3, but that’s as close as the Knights would come.
