It was a tough start to the 2024-25 Tunnel Series for Delta, as they fell 6-3 to the Sockeyes in Richmond Thursday night.
Richmond had the lone goal of the first period, a short-handed marker by Dawson Sucke to put the home team on top through 20 minutes.
Ryden Mathieson tied it up early in the second, re-directing a Tye Hemenway point shot past Oliver Read to even the score. But then Richmond came back with a vengeance, scoring five unanswered through the rest of the second period and into the early third, making it 6-1 before Delta would find twine again.
The Hawks put up two more before the end of the game, starting with Mathieson stealing the puck on his own blue line and going off on a 2-on-0 with Mateo Sjoberg. Mathieson was tripped but was still able to get the puck to Sjoberg, who slipped it in over the goal line for his third of the year.
Nicholas Goyer rounded out the scoring, finishing off a scramble play in front of the Richmond net, making it a 6-3 final for the host Sockeyes.
