September 24 Game Recap – Hawks Win!

The Ice Hawks have their first three-game win streak of the season, taking an 8-3 victory in the first-ever matchup in team history against the Coastal Tsunami.

There was a lot of action in the first period, with seven goals between the two teams. Delta had 20 shots in the period and opened the scoring with two goals in the first four minutes.

Nicholas Goyer had the first one, with a shot from the point that made it past Nick Peters thanks to a successful screen. Minutes later, Mateo Sjoberg, coming off PJHL Star of the Week honours, showed everyone why. While fighting off a defender, Sjoberg was able to fire a shot off the post and in to give the Hawks a 2-0 lead.

Coastal came back with a goal to cut the lead in half, as Jake Yakubowski scored his first of the year on a 5-on-3 for the visitors to make it 2-1.

Second-year Hawks AP Noah Hoglund netted his first PJHL goal in his second appearance with the team of the season, tapping home a rebound from a long point shot to give the Hawks their two-goal lead back.

Coastal didn’t go away, with Raydon Parkes potting one for the Tsunami with six minutes to go in the frame, trying to keep the score close, but the Hawks weren’t finished.

Dawson Toledo got his first of the season by redirecting a point shot from Miller Bruckshaw to make it 4-2, and Sjoberg scored his second of the night when Peters passed the puck right to him deep in the zone and Sjoberg scored on a sharp angle for a 5-2 lead through 20 minutes.

Goyer doubled his goal total on the night halfway through the second period, wristing a wide-open shot past Peters for a 6-2 Delta lead through 30 minutes.

SJoberg was able to complete the hat trick on a pass from Lucas Jakubec to the slot, using his defender as a screen and going far side to net his third of the night and a 7-3 Hawks lead.

Former Hawk AP Ben Walker scored for the other side before the end of the middle frame, bringing Coastal back to within four with the third to come.

Sjoberg and Goyer struck one more time before the end of the game, scoring the only goal in the final frame. Goyer sent a pass up the wing to Sjoberg for a 2-on-1, and Sjoberg kept it and scored his fourth goal and sixth point of the game to make it an 8-3 Hawks win.
