In a rink that always makes for a tough game, the Hawks came away with a 4-1 victory over the White Rock Whalers at Centennial Arena.
Delta allowed the first goal of the game, a power play goal in the first period from White Rock’s Jonah Ussher, which was the only goal of the first 39 minutes, as both goalies stood tall.
That is, until the final minute of the second period, when the Hawks opened their scoring with a play set up by Zach Shaughnessy, who sent the puck up to Mateo Sjoberg in the neutral zone, and he tapped it to a streaking Miller Bruckshaw. Bruckshaw settled it and ripped a wide-open shot past Garin Wickstrom to tie the game in the dying seconds of the middle frame.
Shaughnessy set up the go-ahead goal in the third period on a similar play, passing to the Whalers’ blue line for Rajun Parmar. He gave it to Declan Warburton, who also walked in and fired a shot through his defender’s legs to give the Hawks their first goal of the game.
The Hawks got their insurance goals late in the frame, first with Grady Lenton taking the puck from centre ice all the way around the net, finishing off a wrap-around goal, his tenth on the season, for a 3-1 lead.
And Sjoberg padded his PJHL goal lead, taking advantage of a generous bounce off the boards behind the Whalers’ net, making a quick move around Wickstrom before sliding home a backhand to make it a 4-1 final.
In the third, Lucas Jakubec was injured during play on a hit in the corner. Jakubec was stretchered off the ice and taken to hospital. No details on his status have been released at this time.
