The Delta Ice Hawks win their first game at home this season, taking a 4-3 victory over the Aldergrove Kodiaks Tuesday night at the Ladner Leisure Centre.
Delta got on the board first; Connor Merriman stole the puck behind Aldergrove’s net and passed to Dominic Main in the slot. His shot was stopped, but Cameron Lee was there to finish off the rebound.
The Kodiaks would even the score on a 5-on-3 after the Ice Hawks had two penalties called on the same play. Kale Taylor snuck a backhand past Braedy Euerby in the goalie’s first game back with the Ice Hawks, after being acquired from the Richmond Sockeyes hours before the game.
Tied at one after the first period, Alex Lucchesi gave Delta the lead again midway through the second. From below the goal line, Kyle Robinson found Lucchesi open in the slot and he one-timed it past Mark Paton.
Aldergrove would again tie the game, then take the lead before the end of the middle frame. Jackson Payeur fired a shot from the top of the zone, possibly deflected, past Euerby for the equalizer, and Lewis Nikkel scored far side on a centering pass from Ethan Urquhart.
The only goal in the third period was Delta’s; Ryan Bayley took a shot from the right point and J.J. Milne reached out in the slot and tipped the shot into the net to tie the game up at 3-3.
Overtime was needed to solve this one, and the Hawks carried over their third period momentum into the extra period. Newly-acquired defenseman Ben Kjernisted trailed in behind Dominic Main, who took a shot on net. Kjernisted netted the rebound to win the game for Delta in his Hawks debut.
