October 4 Game Recap – Hawks Win!

On back-to-back nights, the Delta Ice Hawks took home back-to-back wins, the second a 6-2 victory coming Wednesday night in Aldergrove over the Kodiaks.

Six different Hawks scored in the game, with Conner Merriman leading the charge with a goal and two assists, and Zach Shaughnessy backstopped the Hawks for the second night in a row, again allowing just two goals.

The first Hawks goal came halfway through the first period while on the power play. The Merriman brothers controlled the passing, finding Michele Romeo down low. He sent a quick pass into the slot for Conner Merriman, who wristed it home.

Mateo Sjoberg got his first goal as a Hawk, after storming up the ice following a big save made by Shaughnessy. He and Payton Hu made passes back and forth, with Sjoberg finishing off the play with a sharp shot past Kodiak goalie Kyle Spak.

Delta kept rolling in the second, with Conner Merriman passing from below the goal line to Romeo out front. With a little move around a defender, he found the open right side of the net and did not miss, giving Delta a 3-0 lead.

Colin Jang scored his second goal in two games, in a similar way both times, picking up a rebound on the left side of the net and finishing off the play with his seventh of the season.

Aldergrove’s two goals of the game came in the second period, both scored by Taylor Chiu, but after that, Shaughnessy closed the door on the Kodiaks’ offence.

In the third, Tye Hemenway was able to keep the puck just inside the blue line and before the Kodiaks could pressure, he threw a shot on net from the left point and it floated in over the shoulder of Spak to make it a 5-2 Hawks lead.

Danylo Bereza got his first goal of the season to round out Delta’s scoring on the night, sitting in the slot waiting for a pass threaded onto his stick from Nicholas Kolb for a one-time snapshot and a 6-2 Hawks win.
